SBI and ICICI - Why are some banks more important than others?

The Reserve Bank of India has named State Bank of India, the country’s biggest public-sector bank and ICICI, the largest private sector bank as Systemically Important Banks (SIB) in India. The designation implies that SBI and ICICI are Too Big To Fail (TBTF). This means the survival of both banks is critical for the stability of the financial system and the economy as a whole.

Talk - Making people with Developmental Disabilities talk using their breath

Current AAC Devices cost thousands of dollars and are slow, bulky and not generic. Talk has made two major breakthroughs by increasing speaking rate and becoming the world's most affordable AAC device.

Talk expects a person to be able to give two distinguishable exhales (by varying intensity/time) for converting into electrical signals using MEMS Microphone.

It is quite Light and Portable being just 10x6x2 cm in dimensions and weighs not more than a regular smartphone. On a single charge it runs for more than 2 days and is quite comfortable to wear. It takes only 0.8sec to dictate the letter 'A' and 0.4sec for the letter 'E' using Talk, making it the fastest AAC device in the world. Talk can be made available at less than $100, making it the most affordable. With an accuracy of almost 100% and innovative features - 9 voices (male/female) for different age groups, 2 modes (communication/command-phrases) and encoding there is nothing which can compete with features of the device. Talk uses Breath as the medium of interaction between the user and device.

Oliver Sacks, Casting Light on the Interconnectedness of Life - the Doctor and the Writer

Science, with its promise of order and logic, provided a refuge for young Oliver from the chaos of his brother’s madness, and medicine promised both family continuity (his father was a general practitioner; his mother, a surgeon) and a way to study and try to understand brain disorders like Michael’s.
In February, Dr. Sacks wrote in an Op-Ed essay in The New York Times about learning that he had terminal cancer and had just months to live.

400-pound heart of a blue whale: the largest heart that humans have ever preserved

Ajit Babu, who has cerebral palsy, founded three startups in Bengaluru.

He, along with his best friend, Harish Narayan, started Dream Click Concepts in 2009. They also simultaneously founded another startup, Street Light Media, which made TV shows, music videos and advertisements for clients.

“I was sitting outside in my favourite cafĂ©, where all the smokers sat. There are no power points there for charging. Everybody borrows each other’s power banks to charge their phones. I looked down at the solar lamp in my hand, and it looked like a power bank. So I thought, why not make a solar-powered power bank?” says Ajit.

Stratolaunch : soon the Largest Plane in the World.

The Stratolaunch is currently in production at California’s Mojave Air and Space Port. Aerospace firm Scaled Composites has headed-up development of the mammoth aircraft.

Stratolaunch, nicknamed “Roc” after the mythical bird of prey, features two fuselages, six Pratt & Whitney jet engines, 28 landing gear wheels, and a whopping 385 foot wingspan.

It is being constructed using pieces of two already quite large planes–a pair of disused Boeing 747s.

The Stratolaunch is designed to carry a three-stage rocket (equipped with a satellite) between its two fuselages. Upon reaching the correct altitude, the rocket will detach, blast off into space, and later release the satellite. The combined weight of “Roc” plus the rocket is estimated to be 1.3 million pounds.

A setup like the Stratolaunch can allow flexible satellite launches during a range of weather conditions and from anywhere in the world…with a runway big enough, that is. Those are two things a stationary launch pad can’t do.

India's first deaf and dumb cricketer : Baba Sidhaye, also known as Yashwant Prabhakar

Sidhaye once reached a century within an hour, then a world record. It is also said that he had once hit a six into the Arabian Sea while playing a match at PJ Hindu Gymkhana in Marine Lines – one other feat that has not been matched since.

Philanthropy or PR Vehicle for Salman Khan?

A lot of these charitable activites also became well-publicised only after 2002 -- the year in which the hit-and-run accident occurred.

His philanthropy has instead been deployed as a sophisticated makeover machine that sought to change his arrogant, brash image to a much more humane version and to that end, it has succeeded.

Why Finnish babies sleep in cardboard boxes: Where there is a will, there's a way!

For 75 years, Finland's expectant mothers have been given a box by the state. It's like a starter kit of clothes, sheets and toys that can even be used as a bed. And some say it helped Finland achieve one of the world's lowest infant mortality rates.

The tradition dates back to 1938. To begin with, the scheme was only available to families on low incomes, but that changed in 1949.
"Not only was it offered to all mothers-to-be but new legislation meant in order to get the grant, or maternity box, they had to visit a doctor or municipal pre-natal clinic before their fourth month of pregnancy," says Heidi Liesivesi, who works at Kela - the Social Insurance Institution of Finland.

So the box provided mothers with what they needed to look after their baby, but it also helped steer pregnant women into the arms of the doctors and nurses of Finland's nascent welfare state.

In the 1930s Finland was a poor country and infant mortality was high - 65 out of 1,000 babies died. But the figures improved rapidly in the decades that followed.

The contents of the box have changed a good deal over the years, reflecting changing times.

Polonium 210 and how dangerous can it be

If ingested, it is lethal in extremely small doses. Less than 1 gram (0.04 ounces) of the silver powder is sufficient to kill. A 2007 study by radiation experts from Britain's Health Protection Agency concluded that once polonium-210 is deposited in the bloodstream, its potent effects are nearly impossible to stop. A poisoning victim would experience multiple organ failure as alpha radiation particles bombard the liver, kidneys and bone marrow from within. The symptoms shown by Litvinenko — nausea, hair loss, throat swelling and pallor — are also typical.

Polonium makes a good weapon. Its large alpha particles of radiation do not penetrate the skin and don't set off radiation detectors, so it is relatively easy to smuggle across international borders. Polonium can be ingested through a wound or inhaled — but the surest method would be to have the victim consume it in food or drink. Litvinenko drank tea laced with polonium during a meeting at a luxury London hotel.
